L4dmaps.net community map project?

RE: L4dmaps.net community map project?
It may not seem like much is happening right now in the forum, but there are things going on. First, there was a promise that a new thread was being made, but I am giving it till the week for some people who expressed interest in helping out a chance to reply to the private message first. Most people have general interests in mapping and detailing. Once we get the initial three layouts build and reviewed, it will then be dependent on not only this thread, but the community dropbox as well.

If you haven't signed up for dropbox yet, or given Tyr your email if you already have an account, please try to do so. There are many additional notes on that site about goings on. EDIT: I can understand that there are some that do not wish to use Dropbox and that's understandable, please let us know and we can work something else out.

Currently, Map one and two are in the process of being made. Tyr laying out #1's, and I am laying out #2's grid and such. I would ask a volunteer to please speak up about wanting to build the layout for map three (following the layout), And If you have any questions, please speak up!

RE: L4dmaps.net community map project?
Not sure why the forum decided to delete my post earlier, but I'd love to help revive the community with a project like this. I may not be able to contribute heavily at some points because of testing coming up, though.

I prefer to detail, texture, and work with entities; but I can generally help out with other areas if needed, I'm well acquainted with Hammer's basic functions.

Is there anything we might need to do before participating?

RE: L4dmaps.net community map project?
*Crosses Fingers* I haven't heard back from either of the people who offered to help at the moment, but the PM was only sent out Sunday so I don't know if either people I PM'd wanted to take up the tasks I offered. Right now, there is need for someone to do entity work for one of the crescendo events. Something that we can possibly drop into the map.

As for anything you might need, Dr. Kill, is access to the dropbox. It requires your Email address, which either Tyr or I can use to send out the invite.

RE: L4dmaps.net community map project?
Alright. Here's a bit about the current me in terms of Hammer/L4D2. I have no standards in brushwork and lighting, so those are my biggest weakness. Entity work, custom textures, re-skinning models feels like a series of fun experiments and something I get results in. Custom sounds, music, soundscripts and their entries, soundscapes, BSPZIP (you know is easy), I'm very comfortable with, but I'm aware that there are undocumented features to be discovered. I've dealt with a lot of headache inducing VPK management, especially with models, but was able to solve all of them.

I'm all for doing whatever you like and I'll only give you my opinion if you ask for or need it. I'm simply around to help get the job done.

I'm not sure how you're planning to do this. Do you have some kind of document that contains all the stories and events surrounding the crescendo? It would be a great foundation for others to communicate with. Or we could go "free style" (whatever that means), since this is a community map and not a dev house. I'm guessing you give me a job, I download the resources, work on it in a timely manner, upload back to dropbox, you review it, give me feedback, and I make the changes suggested, repeat.

I'm already registered with dropbox and familiar with casual features and I'm aware of the version management (which is an excellent feature for this, I'm sure you know). I'll give you my e-mail address by PM then. Thanks!

I have no problem in you joining, Johnstud. Since you only had one post on the forum, I felt the need to poke around the net and to see what you've worked on before. You've expressed interest in other campaign collaborations before, so tell me, as a mapper, what would you be interested in working on? Detailing? Layout? Any previous work to show off?

RE: L4dmaps.net community map project?
Wink Doing your homework. I have expressed interest in other collaboration based campaigns. In fact I am working on one right now started on the Valve forums. The current map I am working on is a urban/sewer combination: http://www.wizardsofwar.com/files/CityMap.jpg.

I enjoy the layout aspects of the game. I block out a map in dev textures, and get is playable, then carve out all of the structures and details. I usually use instances for major portions of the map (buildings, etc).

To be honest, I am not a detailer or modeler. Although when given a theme, I work within my bounds.

As far a previous work, I have contributed to campaigns, but not released my own. If you want to check out my skills, I can send you some of my .vmf prefabs (houses, buildings, etc).

I'm fine with you PMing me anything, Johnstud. The only other note to getting started is sending a pm with your email for Drop box. The shared folder on that site has our references and work notes for the campaign as well as any materials and VMFs.
